Chapter 21
AS SOON AS THE RECEIPT popped out of its slot, I realized that the three hundred dollars I took out of the trustee account would show up on Edwin Markus O'Callahan's next bank statement, revealing that Letty, or someone else, was onto the account and would soon be onto him.
Bad or good? I wondered. Maybe such a shake-up would cause the secretive man to rush over and tell Letty everything.
I decided not to hold my breath. Letty had been living in the old Doland house alone for years. This O'Callahan character had probably been handling her money just as long. His habit of deceit was well in place.
Thinking of Letty's living conditions, her failing eyesight, and her overall poor health, my temper began to roil. Right then I might have shot Edwin Markus O'Callahan on sight if he hadn't been hidden behind that post office box.
A slender woman in bib overalls gestured to ask if I was finished with the MAC machine. I moved away while she went through the routine, and it occurred to me that now I would be able to make another withdrawal, a trick Iâd learned by accident when I needed more than the machine's maximum allowance.
Soon another three hundred dollars of Letty's money slipped into the cubbyhole, and another buff card showing the lowered balance emerged. By this time Iâd settled down enough to think, and I realized that the checking account balance might be all Letty MacNair had in the worldâalso that it might not be hers. The sporadic deposits the banker Windermere grudgingly mentioned could represent donations from O'Callahan or someone else who wished to remain anonymous.
With slightly less pleasure than I had anticipated, I called Dominick the plumber on my cell phone and left my message with his wife. "Please ask him to fix my neighbor's plumbing as soon as possibleâI have the money." I just hoped Letty wouldn't be needing it for food.
There was only one way to find out.
